What is this fascination with that game called World of Warcraft?

Just wondering….my husband is really into games…used to be PS2…but now he is way into his Xbox360 and his PS hand held thingy…but we got a new laptop last week and he bought World of Warcraft…he has kinda gotten into…but I KNOW that man…soon it will CONSUME him. I got on there today and made my own character…just for fun, but he got all excited…like I was doing something really good. We do have 2 computers now, so I see how we could play at the same time or something? Can girls get into this? I am not much of video game person. And please, what is the reason for this games popularity? His coworker recommended it and said his wife actually plays it.
